Victory! In Which We Conquer Taking Out the Floors.

We finally did it. We got the rest of the floors out. Well... okay.. not all of it. There are a few places by the wheel wells that we need to figure out how to get to.

Taking out the floors was a lot of work. I wouldn't wish that nightmare on anyone. It was hot, gross and back breaking work.

We each ended up with several injuries over the weekend. My guess is they were most inflicted during bouts of heat exhaustion.
The whole time we were tearing the floor out I was trying to not question our decision to take it down to the frame. I mean there was  a lot of rotted wood... but part of me wishes we could have just covered it up like the last owners. (not really)

It was clear that Spartan built with excellent quality back in the day. The walls and frame were added after the floors, so those original floors were incredibly sturdy stuff.

Luckily we took notes on how the floors were put in and hope to copy their flooring technique when we rebuild it next week. We are still trying to get our hands on donated 1x4 douglas fir wood planks.

We received a generous donation of wood from Procon Construction for our floors, and are keeping our eyes out for the right kind of beams so we can put them in, and walk around safely again.

I've had a few people ask me to set up a donation call list which you can see here! (thank you!)

We are trying to keep this project as environmentally and wallet friendly as possible, and love the idea of using reclaimed or donated wood.

If we can't get the wood by next week we are hoping to start doing patch work on the outside of the trailer. There are some holes, dents and even bb bullet holes in some of the walls.

We will also likely be pressure washing the inside and outside shell. We are in for a fun weekend!

Mobile Mansion Rebuild Week 3 Shit Got Real

I'm going to be honest with you... it was a pretty nightmarish rebuild day last Saturday. We got to Ruby a little late in the day and had to figure out how to move her to a location where we could better work on her.

It was extremely hot by the time we got to working on her... and without the insulation or walls she heated up pretty freaking quick. We were basically ROASTING inside a tin can.

We were taking the floors out this week. We were hoping to prime the frame by next week, but sadly we will be going back this weekend, to take the rest of the floors out.

It looks like we are the 3rd people to rebuild this trailer. We almost got down to her frame to find screws that were only used in the 60's to hold the floors to the frame. We also found a newspaper clipping from the 80's(??) tucked in between the floors, and we know that the floor on the frame is not the original manufacturer flooring... the tools don't match up, and it just makes no sense to put the floors in the way they did.

But, taking out the floors is crucial in this rebuild... the people who put the flooring down in the 60's certainly didn't think anyone would need to take the floors out.. so they made it basically indestructible... but if only the people who tried to rebuild it in the 80's would have taken better care of it the floors wouldn't have rotted away!

Luckily my heat induced mental breakdown wasn't caught on camera. but I assure you it happened. I lost it. I suddenly found myself in over my head and I totally broke down and cried in frustration over these stubborn rotted floors. Don't worry. I eventually pulled myself up, stomped around and kicked some floors in. I'll be back next Saturday to rip the rest of the floors out with more determination than ever. Dreams are really hard work.

Tearing Down The Walls {Mobile Mansion Rebuild}

This weekend we tore out the walls in our Spartan Royal Mansion. The (soon to be) mobile art studio is now down to her bare bones. There was some pretty scary stuff in the walls! We found an old "Radiation Warning" sign, dried up insect bodies, and very old insulation, very gross looking insulation.

I was so thankful Sterling let me handle the drill while he dealt with the majority of the insulation and the bugs.

The old wood walls came out pretty easily, but the insulation disintegrated upon exposure and became a thick dust that coated everything. Again, I was so thankful for the goggles and face masks.. and I'm seriously hoping there wasn't anything too harmful in that vintage insulation!

Once the walls were out and we swept up as much dust as we could and started seriously considering the floor plan. We are wanting to do a lot of add-ons.

Dreaming up the floor plan was one of my favorite parts of this weekend after all the hard (and gross) work.  We actually spent 2 full days on the wall's demolition!

I wouldn't trade it for anything though! We worked  very very hard this weekend, and tomorrow is another "work" day in the studio! I'm getting ready for Making Mandalas! I am getting so excited!! AND I have a fun little gift for all those who have signed up for the class! As soon as I get myself totally cleaned and rested up.. I'll be sending out a welcome email soon.

But first, here's a quick video of our incredible long weekend.
